Hello Hong Kong, good to hear from you

In this podcast we spoke to Hong Kong veteran Stewart Aldcroft of Citi about prospects in light of Covid 19 and Beijing’s recent security crackdown.
Despite this baleful background, he says the Hong Kong funds' industry continues to serve everyone’s interests — and is in competitive good health.
Last year saw a record US$90bn in gross sales locally, much of that going into high yield bonds and increasingly global equities.
And with mainland money as much as one-third of that total, past distinctions about client needs are eroding, save in one important respect: a constant focus on returns.
In only one respect has Hong Kong lagged. With the benchmark Hang Seng index some 30% below its peak, like other Asian markets it has felt the cold shoulder of global investors’ multi-year retreat from emerging markets.
